Sitting at 8:30pm, enjoying my hot coffee in a cold winter night thinking to myself, “caffeine makes me alert, it will definitely make me sleepless tonight.” However, my enjoyment with this magical cup overcame my worries. Indeed, that night I suffered from insomnia that made me terribly tired the next morning. It took me ages to wake up and get out of bed.
This silly incidence made me reflect… Most of our human decisions are based on temporary satisfaction. “YOLO” (You Only Live Once) and “Carpe Diem” (Seize the day) became a universal motto. All we want is to enjoy the moment not thinking about nor measuring the consequences of our present actions which will eventually affect our near or far future. We neglect a toxic effect of a one-night stand, a destructive outcome of an improperly expressed bad emotion, or a ridiculous action that we know we will regret later on… Regret is painful…
Yes, I am free to drink coffee now but I know I will regret later.
